Resist-Refuse Dynamics amid Allegations of Trauma

When: 24 September from 1:00 PM - 3:00 PM AEST
Speaker: Lyn R. Greenberg, Ph.D., ABPP

When children resist contact with a parent, both parents are likely to present the cause in absolute terms – one may allege that the child has been traumatized, while the other asserts that the contact refusal is entirely the result of “alienation” or parental undermining. Both terms suggest extreme and one-sided pictures that are rarely accurate in these troubled families. The exaggerated language common in litigation may blur the distinctions between traumatic events, chronic toxic stress, and lesser degrees of poor parenting and dysfunctional relationships.

Similarly, children’s relationships with parents may be undermined by a variety of parental behaviours, not just the active “coaching” that preferred parents are often accused of. Failure to intervene with these dynamics can cause children to suffer greater adverse effects from both traumatic events and entrenched family conflict.

Dr. Greenberg will address these issues and provide practical, trauma-sensitive tools for assisting children at the centre of conflict, without compromising single expert or other external investigations.  Practical strategies for judicial officers will also be addressed.
